چکیده

2014 We measured the cross sections of 22Na, 20,21,22Ne and 36,38,39,42Ar in nuclear reactions induced by the proton bombardment of Mg, Al, Si, Ca and Fe at several energies between 0.059 and 24 GeV using highsensitivy mass-spectrometry for noble gases and 03B3-counting for 22Na. We then evaluated the cross section ratio versus energy for the 22Na/22Ne, 26Al/21Ne, 39Ar/38Ar and 36Cl/36Ar radioactive-stable pairs of isotopes, which are useful for measuring the exposure age of meteorites. From the results alone, we can set some limits to the corresponding production ratios in iron meteorites, but not in stony objects because a knowledge of chemical abundances of Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Fe, and shielding conditions are required. Chapter 4: Principles of Exposure Age Determination Using Terrestrial in Situ Produced Cosmogenic Nuclides

After the discovery of the cosmic radiation in the 1910’s, Grosse (1934) was the first who suggested that the cosmic radiation could produce radioactive nuclides at the surface of the Earth. The next step towards the utilisation of cosmogenic nuclides in earth sciences was the discovery of Libby (Libby et al. 1949) in the late 1940s: during its interaction with the atmosphere, cosmic radiation ...

Measurement of long-term denudation rates in carbonate landscapes using in situ-produced 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide

ecent progresses have been made in the quantification of denudation of eroding landscapes and its links with topography. Despite these advances, data is still sparse in carbonate terrain, which covers a significant part of the Earth’s surface. We can now measure in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides concentrations in various near-surface materials, allowing accurate quantification of the rates o...

Cross-section measurements of krypton 78 to 86 isotopes in the spallation of palladium and silver. A new semi-empirical spallation formula in the Y to Ag target mass region

2014 Cosmogenic krypton in iron meteorites arises from the bombardment of the elements between Zr (Z = 40) and Pd (Z = 46) by primary and secondary cosmic rays. In this work we measured the cross-sections of 7886Kr formation in nuclear reactions induced by the proton bombardment of Pd and Ag at 0.15, 0.6 (Ag only), 1.05 and 24 GeV using high-sensitivity mass-spectrometry. We then developed a Ru...

Cosmic-ray Exposure Age of a 480 Myr Old Fossil Meteorite by Noble Gas Analyses of Relict Chromite Grains

We detected cosmogenic He and Ne in 6 individual chromite grains from a fossil meteorite recovered from a quarry in Lower Ordovician (480 Ma) marine limestone in southern Sweden. Helium and neon exposure ages agree with each other at ~300’000 years, suggesting neglible loss of cosmogenic He and Ne. This exposure age is at the very low end of the range of values observed for presentday meteorite...
